Kokanee Salmon Identification

Effective July of 2012, Kokanee Salmon can be taken with archery equipment only during designated snagging seasons and where permitted. Check with local lake with lake officials before pursuing this species.

When pursuing Kokanee Salmon during the snagging season, you must be able to identify your target properly. Below are some above the water pictures of Kokanee Salmon to help you familiarize with what Kokanee Salmon may look like from above the water when you are bowfishing. As always, if you are unsure of your target don’t shoot!

Northern Pike Identification

When pursuing Northern Pike you must be able to identify your target properly. Below is some information to help you familiarize with what Northern Pike may look like from above the water when you are bowfishing. As always, if you are unsure of your target don’t shoot!

The take of Northern Pike by archery equipment, a relatively new law initiated and changed by the DOW itself; went into effect January 1st 2011 as noted in Chapter 1 #103 of the fishing regulations. This is a gone awry species according to the DOW. Given this is a new law and each lake has the ability to override this regulation be sure to review Chapter 1 #108 as well as checking with lake/property authorities before attempting to harvest this species at any body of water.

NOTE: Northern Pike are excellent to eat! After harvesting one take care to keep it cool and in a live well if you have one.

Also familiarize yourself with species identification for Northern Pike and do not mistake a Northern Pike for a Tiger Muskie which is NOT legal to harvest. Here are some links for species identification:

DOW approves citizen issue paper to permit bowfishing for Kokanee Salmon during the snagging season

At the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission’s latest meeting on November 10th-11th the commission voted to approve the proposed citizen issue paper to permit the harvest of Kokanee Salmon with archery equipment (bowfishing) during the snagging season.

This regulation will go into effect April 1st 2012. That means that beginning April 1, 2012 archery take of salmon is lawful during times and in places otherwise open to snagging of salmon. Please be sure to read the new 2012 regulations as they are made available.

This is a big win for fisheries in our great State as it will help maximize the harvest of prized editable fish before they expire. Secondly it opens up an additional method of take for sportsmen in the state of Colorado, further expanding the opportunities for people to experience the great outdoors through bowfishing and archery. A special thanks to Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission, DOW staff and all individuals out there who sent in their comments of support on this issue to the Commission over the past few months.

Stop invasive species, improve fisheries and support bowfishing in Michigan

Its time to help the sport of bowfishing, fisheries in MI and support your fellow bowfishermen in the state of Michigan. Current bowfishing regulations in MI only permit bowfishing on a majority of lakes within a specific limited season (~May through ~August).

Some new bowfishing regulations laws have been proposed by bowfisherman in Michigan and will be heard in October by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission. The actual votes/decisions by the commission will take place in October. Details from the last NRC meeting in September are here. The main point of the proposal would be to potentially permit bowfishing all year for invasive species (currently a limited season and limited rough species).

The Bowfishing Association of Michigan (BAM – http://www.bowfishbam.com/) and the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC – http://www.mucc.org/) needs your help by writing the Michigan Natural Resources Commission to offer your support of these new proposals.

Ideas for you to consider including in your comments of support to the NRC are:

-Endorse the proposed law changes as written

-Challenge the restrictions of trout waters being off limits. (point is removal of rough fish is a benefit to all streams including trout streams and the only reason we are currently restricted is ease of enforcement of no spearing of trout) there is no science supporting these restrictions.

-Question why there are any restrictions?

-Offer facts as to the benefits of rough fish removal.

-Offer results and or studies that support the destruction caused by these rough fish.

-Any other considerations you may have in relation to this issue

-Thank them for their time and consideration.

The meeting at which comments will be heard (and must be submitted by) is on September 15th 2011.

Bass Pro Shops COBF fundraiser food booth

This past weekend the COBF was extended an invitation by Bass Pro Shops to run a fundraising food booth outside of the store during their fall hunting classic show. At the booth the COBF sold, brauts/dogs, chips and drinks. We also handed out tons of COBF info cards and gave away the remaining sponsor brochures at the event. Many new folks expressed interest in the sport of bowfishing which was great! Thanks to those COBF members who came down and helped run the booth.

A big thanks to Bass Pro Shops in Denver for inviting us out!

The Bylaws were last amended on 8/13/2011. Changes to the Bylaws require a 2/3rds majority vote by members present at a COBF general membership meeting.
